GB7KH Multimode Digital Voice UHF Repeater

GB7KH started life as one of two D-Star digital UHF repeater in the County of Suffolk. It had the issued call sign of GB7PP and was originally set up in January 2015 by Peter Pryke (G8HUE) with assistance from Richard Vickerstaff (M1ADT) on the software side of the repeater. GB7PP operated in Ipswich with coverage to the town.

In early July 2016 Peter discussed transferring the repeater ownership to me along with relocating the repeater.

On the 22nd July 2016 Ofcom issued me with the NoV transferring repeater keeper status to me. On the 9th November 2016 the NoV which enabled the move of GB7PP to Mendlesham, Mid-Suffolk in an attempt to increase it coverage across the County, was granted.

To help with the connectivity I had been assisted by Mark Jaggard (2E0TNG) who also donated the gateway computer.

On Sunday 28th May 2017 GB7PP went live following a change of software to ircDDB Gateway, skillfully configured by Mark Taylor (G0LGJ).

On 14th October 2017 a further application was submitted to the RSGB and Ofcom to enable digital multimode access using D-Star, Yaesu Fusion and DMR. The NoV was granted just 4 days later making GB7PP the first multimode digital repeater in Suffolk. Changes to the transmitter/receiver, software and interface are taking place to enable users to use all modes of access.

In February 2019 two Motorola GM350 UHF radios were purchased along with new computer hardware to interface the radios to the digital networks. Pi-Star was chosen, as the software offered the greatest flexibility for the new repeater. Both Motorola radios were programmed by James Large (G7MLO)

Sadly in 2022 the decision was made to take GB7PP off the air, due to poor coverage and lack of use.

In March 2026 it was decided that the repeater could be reconfigured and put back on the air, this time as a C4FM YSF digital repeater, removing D-Star and DMR modes. Unfortunately, since GB7PP had been off the original call sign had been reallocated to another repeater. For this reason a new call sign GB7KH (previously allocated to the repeater at Kelvedon Hatch nuclear bunker) was allocated along with a new frequency allocation. With a change of frequency, both the duplexer and band pass filter needed retuning, which was skilfully done by Iain Moffat (G0OZS).
